Donor Advised Funds

Are you looking for a simple, flexible tool that allows you to manage and maximize your giving to support the ministries that matter most to you? Would you like to have the ability to make a single significant gift to support multiple ministries that you are passionate about? Are you interested in a way to simplify your annual and lifetime charitable giving?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, a donor advised fund (or DAF) might be a great solution for you. With a DAF, you can distribute gifts to one or more ministries during your lifetime, and when you pass away, your children can carry on your legacy of giving.

Benefits of a donor advised fund

  • Deductibility. You may be entitled to make an immediate income tax deduction each time you make a gift. Contributions of appreciated capital assets avoid capital gain taxes.
  • Flexibility. You can give when and where you want. Take your time deciding how to designate your giving. There is no deadline for making distributions.
  • Simplicity. A DAF is easy to set up and helps you avoid the extensive bookkeeping and check-writing that is often involved in charitable giving.
  • Versatility. You can make gifts to your DAF using cash, appreciated securities and a variety of other assets.
  • Multiplicity. You can make a gift of one large asset to fund multiple charitable interests.
  • Privacy. You can designate your grants anonymously if you wish.
  • Family. You can engage your family in the journey and joy of generosity.
  • Legacy. You can ensure that your legacy continues on by leaving instructions with your heirs directing them to give.

How a donor advised fund works

  1. You make an initial, irrevocable gift of cash or stock to fund a DAF at The Alliance.
  2. The assets in your DAF grow tax-free.
  3. You make annual recommendations on gifts to be made from your DAF.
  4. When you pass away, your children may recommend charitable gifts from your DAF.

How do I get started

  1. Read the following documents to understand the IRS and Orchard Alliance restrictions on donor advised funds:
  2. Complete the Donor Advised Fund Application and fax it to (719)323-6218 or mail it to Orchard Alliance at: 8595 Explorer Dr., Colorado Springs, CO 80920. Due to privacy and security concerns, please do not email your application.
  3. Mail a check to us for your initial contribution or call toll free (833)672-4255 for instructions to transfer securities.
Mail: Orchard Alliance, 8595 Explorer Dr., Colorado Springs, CO 80920

More on donor advised funds

A donor advised fund has several advantages when compared to a private foundation. The start-up time and cost are minimal for DAFs, and gifts to DAFs are generally deductible at fair market value. A DAF is also not subject to the distribution requirements and certain excise taxes faced by private foundations.
